Abraham Stein was born between 1881 – 1883 in Odessa based on various documents. His parents were Hyman/Herman Stein and Sarah Vinocur.

He married Bertha rosanky / Rosen in Odessa where their three dest children were born: Morris in 1904 and Hyman in 1906. It looks like Hyman was named after his grandfather which gives us an idea of when he died. There was another son, Irving, who died in 1905.

Abraham emigrated to the US in 1909 based on various census records. His wife and sons followed about 2 years later. He and Bertha then had 2 more children: Samuel in 1912 and Miriam in 1918.

According to the 1915 New York State Census, they were living in Brooklyn on DeKalb Avenue and Abe was working as a truck driver. He was not naturalized.

Bertha married Herman Cohen in 1922. They now had a blended family: 2 children from Herman and 4 children of Bertha’s. Herman raised the children as his own and was very close to his grandchildren. They had no idea he was not their birth grandfather.
