Sam Sterenoz
Esther’s brother, Sam Sterenoz, arrived in New York CIty on Oct. of 1904 on the steamship S.S. Baltic. He was 28 years old, married, but travelling alone, and going to his brother-in-law’s, M. Feldman’s home.
We see him listed on the ship manifest upon his arrival in New York City, but also on the out-going ship manifest leaving Liverpool. On both, his occupation is listed as a brick-layer.
When he arrived in New York, he was detained. He waited for Morris, and or, Esther to arrive to pick him up and accompany him to their apartment at 306 Bushwick Ave. in Brooklyn. Their apartment was in the Bushwick section of Brooklyn which was known as “Little Germany”. With the construction of the Williamsburg Bridge, it became easy to work in Manhattan from Bushwick.

Sam lived with Morris and Esther through 1905 until his wife arrived. He worked as a glazier which was a skilled tradesman who cut, installed and removed glass in buildings.

His wife, Anna Maltaner (Moltana) arrived between 1905 – 1906. Over the years they had four children all born in the United States: Nathan, Mollie, Esther, and William. Esther must have been named for Samuel’s sister, Esther, who died in 1911. All of the children had the last name of Stein.
By 1910, he was working as a chair framer in the furniture industry. Did he work with his brother-in-law, Morris Feldman, or did Morris find him a job in the furniture industry? He was living with his wife, Annie, and young son, Nathan, and a boarder, William Spector on Metropolitan Avenue in Brooklyn. He is not yet naturalized.

By 1915, he is working as a Laundryman and is still not naturalized. He now has three children: Nathan, Mollie (Male) and Ester. They are living on 1st Ave. in New York City.

In 1920, he is still living in New York City at 337/9 E. 49th Street and not yet naturalized. He now owns the laundry business.

By 1925, he moved to the Bronx with his family. His youngest son William is listed as one year old. He is still listed as an alien (not naturalized). His occupation is listed as a Wet Wash Company.

In 1930, he shows up as naturalized, still living in the Bronx, but on Harrod Street. He now says he is a manager in the laundry industry.

At this point, we lose track of Sam and Annie.
