Dov Ber, also known as Benjamin or Barnett, Sternson or Stein or Shtyren, was the grandfather of Esther Sterenson Feldman, my great-grandmother. That would make Dov Ber my third great-grandfather. Little is known about him.

We know that he was born around 1835 in Russia and died in Russia before 1906.

We also know he married Miriam (Mary) Krenza. She was also born about 1835 in Russia.

They had four children that we currently know of:

  1. Sadie (1854 – 1934) who went by Stein or Stern. She married Akive Cohen. She was born in Miasto, Bialystok, Podlaskie, Poland and died in the Bronx, New YorK. Sadie and Akive had seven children.
  2. Herman (aka Hyman or Chaim) when by Stein, Stern, Sterner, and Sterensohn was born in Russia. He married Sarah Vinekur and they had three children that we currently know of. One of them was Ester, my great-grandmother.
  3. Sarah who went by Sterenson, Sternson and Stein. She was born in 1864 in Russia and died in New York City. She married Maier (Mayer, Meyer, Myer) Feldman and they had 8 children.
  4. Pincas or Philip Stein who was born in Odessa in Marh of 1866. He died October 20, 1906 in the Bronx, New York. He married Jennie Steinberg or Sternberg. They had 3 children that we know of.

The only photo that currently exists of Dov Ber and Miriam’s immediate family is of their daughter, Sadie, and her husband, Akive Cohen.

Akive and Sadie Stein Cohen

As you can see, the family used different variations of their surname making it confusing and difficult to find information about them.
